Equifax.com Promotional Code: Free 3-in-1 Credit Report & FICO Score

Visit the 3-in-1 Credit Report with Score page at Equifax and click on “Buy Now”. You’ll have to register on the website or log in with a previously created account. There is no need to enter credit card information. When you are able to, enter the promotion code NOC431 and the price will show as $0.00. Via littlepenguin of SD. Users have reported mixed success with many people getting some sort of error, but it worked fine for me:

You will end up with your credit reports from all three credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion) as well as your official FICO score based on your Experian credit report. (You know you have 3 different FICO scores – one from each bureau – right?) A pretty good deal, although I wouldn’t say it’s worth the $39.95 retail price. I wouldn’t wait too long on this, the code could expire at any time. (Update: Appears to be expired, some people are calling in manually and applying the code with success.)

EverBank Yield Pledge Money Market & Checking: Good Offer For $10k+ Balances

Everbank has 6-month bonus rates for their Yield Pledge Money Market and FreeNet Checking accounts. Both of these offers are targeted at new customers opening with at least $1,500, but in the end do offer some of the top rates available for an FDIC-insured bank account with these terms.

Yield Pledge Money Market

With a 6-month guaranteed introductory rate of 1.10% APY, this is higher than any available 6-month CD out there, which again is better than any 6-month CD offer out there.. After that, it is like other online savings accounts with a variable ongoing APY (currently 0.86%).

This online savings account “pledges” to keep the yield on your account in the top 5% of competitive accounts as tracked by Bankrate. (Everbank has indeed ended up on lists of best banks with consistently high rates.) Since it is a savings account, you are still limited to 6 withdrawals or outgoing transfers each month. There is a minimum average balance of $5,000 to avoid a $8.95 monthly fee.

FreeNet Checking

A checking account version, this also has a a 6-month guaranteed introductory rate of 1.10% APY, with a tiered interest rate afterward. (Current tiers and ongoing Annual Percentage Yields are: $100,000 at 0.86% APY, $50,000 – $99,999.99 at 0.83% APY, $25,000 – $49,999.99 at 0.78% APY, $10,000 – $24,999.99 at 0.76% APY and under $10,000 at 0.70% APY). There is no monthly fee.

Again, if you do the math this effectively extends the bonus rate of 1.10% out to between 5 and 6 months on a $10,000 balance, which is still better than any other CD offer of the same length. This account also pledges to keep the yield on your account in the top 5% of competitive accounts, but remember in this case that checking accounts in general have slightly lower rates.

If you are looking to get high FDIC-insured interest rates on a sizable balance for between a couple months to a year, without having to jump through any hoops like required monthly transfers or 15 debit card purchases a month, then this continues to be one of the best rates out there.

Citibank Back-to-School Student Credit Cards

Going back to school? Citibank has some good card options for college students:

  • Citi mtvU Platinum Select Visa Card
  • Citi Forward Card for College Students – $75 Statement Credit

Both the mtvU and Forward cards offer 5x rewards on bookstores, movies, music, and restaurants – boy do they know students. 5x ThankYou points amounts to 3.45% cash back or 5% back in the form of gift cards from certain retailers. Great deal if you can handle credit responsibly. I’m pretty sure I applied for my first credit card in college in exchange for a cheap t-shirt with a Cal logo on it and no rewards whatsoever. Good thing I’ve always hated owing other people money…

As noted previously, 5x points on bookstores also includes anything bought at Amazon.com (a bookstore!). Would go perfectly with your free year of Amazon Prime.

Free Year of Amazon Prime For Students (.edu email)

Amazon Student LogoAmazon.com has a new program called Amazon Student where you can get “exclusive deals”, the best of which is a free one-year subscription to Amazon Prime. This allows you to get the convenience of free 2-day shipping on most products (including textbooks and even some used books) with no minimum order amount. Usually costs $79 a year.

You can even keep your existing Amazon.com account, just click here, enter your .edu e-mail address, and click on the confirmation e-mail to activate. If you have an .edu e-mail, try it!

This is a really nice perk, and would go great with the Citi Forward® Card gives you 5 ThankYou® Points for every $1 you spend at restaurants and on entertainment, like bookstores, of which Amazon.com counts regardless of what you are actually buying at the bookstore. Up to 2% APR reduction when using credit wisely. This equates to 5% back in the form of gift cards at select retailers, or a 3.45% pure cashback return. Really, I’ve done it.  2,500 bonus ThankYou Points after spending $500 within the first 3 months of cardmembership and up to 1,200 bonus ThankYou Points for paying on time and staying under your credit limit. Watch your interest rate go down and your ThankYou Points go up.

See my Citi Forward review and rewards follow-up for more details.

New Credit Card Trend: Rotating Rewards, Swiss Army Style

When you charge something on your credit card, the merchant usually pays about 2-3% in transaction fees for the convenience and benefit of accepting these cards (it makes it easier for people to spend money with them). In order to get their specific card “in your wallet”, issuers often rebate part of these fees in the form of % cashback rewards or frequent flier miles. This makes sense, because many people with good credit and/or higher spending don’t carry balances so that the primary source of profits is from these transaction fees.

Swiss Army Knife

The trick for issuing banks, of course, is to offer as little rewards as possible yet still convince enough people as a group to use the card. The newest trend is to offer a high 3% to 5% back (more than they take in!) but only on a specific group of rotating purchases. Usually the rest earn 1% cashback. If you pay attention to the rules, this can make for some significant savings. I think of it as a Swiss army knife of credit cards; you just need to pick the right one for the job. 🙂 It might even be time to dust off an old card you don’t use anymore.

Here are some popular cards and their current rotating categories. Also, new cardholders can combine with current sign-up bonuses of up to $100 upfront.

Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® Visa® Card
Reward categories change quarterly. From April 1st to June 30th, you can earn 5% cash back on

  • Home Depot
  • Home Furnishing purchases
  • Home & Garden Purchases

After you get your card, you must enroll by logging into your account or calling 1-800-231-0891. There is no cap on the 5% back, except for the $300 overall cap on all dividend rewards annually. All other purchases do earn a standard 1% with no tiers, and rewards do not expire as long as you have activity once every 12 months.

Chase Freedom Visa – $100 Bonus Cash Back
Reward categories change quarterly. From January 1 to March 31, 2012 you can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 spent in the following categories:

  • Gas Stations
  • Amazon.com

You must enroll at ChaseBonus.com. All other purchases do earn a standard 1%, with no tiers or expiration of rewards. Currently, the Chase Freedom Visa – $100 Bonus Cash Back has a promotion offering a $100 check if you sign up and make $500 in purchases in your first three months.

Discover More CardDiscover More Card
Reward categories change quarterly. From January 1st to March 31st, you can earn 5% cash back on up to $300 spent in the following categories:

  • Gas
  • Entertainment

In September, you can also earn 5% cash back on up to $200 spent in grocery stores and drugstores. You must enroll online to activate the rewards each quarter. Discover card has a tiered cashback rate (1% unlimited Cashback Bonus on purchases after your total annual purchases exceed $3000; purchases that are part of your first $3000 earn .25%.).

PenFed Platinum Cashback Rewards CardPenFed Platinum Cashback Rewards Card
Bonus categories appear and change regularly for this card, but not on a set schedule.

You can view all the eligible merchants. You don’t need to enroll. This is in addition to the year-round rewards structure of 5% cash back on gas purchases (must pay at pump) and 1% cash back on everything else. Rewards are credited monthly on your next statement.

Note: To get this card, you must also have membership to the Pentagon Federal Credit Union (you can apply for both at the same time). In general, membership is open to the military, US government employees, or the family or household of existing members. However, anyone can become eligible by joining the National Military Family Association (NMFA) for a $20 one-time fee. PenFed also offers other competitive financial products, including low-rate mortgages and long-term CD rates.

In order to keep track of all these, I usually just cut off the top part of a Post-It note with the sticky backing, and use it to label each card in my wallet. Here’s a pic of one of my cards:

Capital One 360 Independence Day Offers

Online bank Capital One 360 has a few specials for Independence Day that (for some reason) are only good until midnight on Friday, July 2nd. In all cases, they are slightly better versions of offers that they regularly offer. Not a bad time to pounce if you’ve been on the fence. Thanks to reader Terry for the tip.

Perkstreet Checking with 2%/5% Cashback Debit Card

Perkstreet Card BannerPerkstreet Financial is relatively new, but they’ve already tried a bunch of different ways to make their online checking account attractive, from sign-up bonuses to coffee awards. However, I think they’ve stumbled onto something with their new cashback debit card rewards structure that beats out any other online bank currently:

  • Earn 2% cash back on all non-PIN debit card purchases when your checking account balance is $5,000 or more. For new accounts, you will earn 2% cash back no matter what your balance is for the first 3 months, starting on the day that your account is opened. (Otherwise if your balance that day is below $5k, you earn 1% cash back.)
  • Earn 5% cash back at a rotating set of retailers. This appears to be the new trend amongst many rewards cards. For October 2012, you can get 5% cash back at The Cheesecake Factory®, Pottery Barn®, Pottery Barn Kids®, PotteryBarn.com, Ace Hardware®, AceHardware.com.
  • PowerPerks 2.0 with deals updated every week
  • There is no limit to the amount of cashback you can earn.

Fees. The account has no minimum balance requirement, but does require you to have some sort of activity each month to avoid a $4.50 inactivity fee. Be sure to have some sort of deposit/withdrawal (electronic transfer is fine), debit card purchase, online billpay, or a cleared check every month.

The checking account earns no interest, so you’ll have to account for that based on your usual average balances. On the website, it advertises that you could earn $600 in rewards each year. Here’s their rationale:

Making $601 in weekly non-PIN purchases will earn you $625 in perks annually (when you maintain a balance of $5,000). According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American household spends $601 per week on purchases that could be put on a debit card, including stuff like utility bills or rent.

I’d adjust your expectations according to your own situation. I’ve never had a landlord that let me charge my rent on a debit/credit card, although I’m sure some are out there. 🙂 Example: Charging $500 a month at 2% back would be $120 a year.

Opening an account. They do try to make it easy… you only need $25 to open, and you can even do your initial funding on a credit card for up to $500; they promise to run it as a purchase to avoid cash advance fees.

For folks who already have a their preferred set of cashback credit cards, this might not be enough to switch. However, this does serve as a nice alternative for the subset of folks who choose to avoid credit cards for whatever reason. I have lots of friends that prefer debit cards due to the sheer simplicity of it – they buy something, and the money gets taken out direct from the checking account. Done. No extra bills to pay. I just read that 50% of all charge card purchases this year will be done on debit cards, so they aren’t alone.

Google Voice Now Available To All In US

Google Voice announced today that it is now available to everyone in the US, with no need to track down an invite. Here’s a nice, quick intro video for the service for the unfamiliar:

For more tips, see my previous post on how to save money with Google Voice. Did you know you can use it to get free long distance anywhere in the US with your landline? Or, you can give your out-of-state parents a local number they can now call to reach you without paying long distance charges either. GV has expanded their available area codes recently, although many areas are still unavailable for now.

I currently use Google Voice as an additional freelance work number to give out, as opposed to my “one number to rule them all”. I also have it set up to handle my voicemail for my cell phone, in which GV transcribes them and sends it to me as a text message. The overall transcription isn’t the best, but enough to get the general idea and it manages to excel at recognizing phone numbers. I do enjoy the convenience of just reading messages as texts, and being able to listen to messages online while traveling internationally.

Any Gizmo5 experts want to write a guest post on how to build your own VoIP phone service with Google Voice on the cheap? Update: Gizmo5 is closed to new accounts. Lifehacker has a post about using Sipgate to make free calls (a bit clumsily). Since I’m happy with my Ooma, I don’t think I’m willing to put in the research time. 🙂

Ohio 529 College Savings Plan Bonus Ends June 30th

This is just a reminder that the Ohio 529 College Savings Plan is still offering a $25 bonus if you are referred to open a new account and deposit at least $25 by June 30, 2010. You can apply for and fund the account all electronically, so you still have time. The referrer gets $50, and refer others after you sign up. I have an account with them, and my Ohio CollegeAdvantage referral code is 2439350. If you use it, thanks!

You can read more promotion details, account opening tips, and a review of the plan itself here.

myFICO Coupon Code: 20% to 30% Off

Update February 2011: Use coupon code FICO25 for 25% off!

I am not a big fan having to purchase credit scores. I can understand why a lender would pay to get a calculation of your likelihood of defaulting on your loan, but if it’s based on our data, why do we have to pay just to see it? Even if I am declined for a loan, I can only see my report, not the numerical score that supposedly defines my financial life.

There are plenty of “FAKE-O” credit scores out there, but the only place to get your real FICO score is myFICO.com. If you must order your score, use the promotional code CPPSAVINGS to get 20% off.

For the Equifax credit score only, you can get it for $10.95 using the code SW94608, which is over 30% off. You enter the promo code relatively late in the buying process, right before entering your credit card information.

Whenever you do buy a score, I would recommend trying to correlate your score and the current information on your report. Then you can start to learn what changes really affect your score. I’ve applied for 12 credit cards and canceled 5 with almost no appreciable affect to my scores (see credit score myths) – despite all the “rules” – only to have a huge balance on my mom’s credit card (with me as authorized user) show up and drop it by 30 points.

Firstrade Brokerage Switches Clearing Firms, Offers Free Outgoing Account Transfers

I received a letter this week that discount stock broker Firstrade is changing clearing firms from Ridge Clearing to Penson Financial*. Not really a big deal, but hidden in the fine print is that existing users can perform an account transfer to another broker with no fee if you request a transfer within 30 days from the Conversion Date (“on or about June 25, 2010”). The normal outgoing ACAT transfer fee is $50, so this gives you an opportunity to consolidate or switch brokers with no cost.

If you are looking to open a new account with Firstrade, they do offer an fee rebate against your old broker for transferring over. In addition, they have a Firstrade Refer-a-Friend program that offers new customers 5 free trades to start.

* Penson Financial is used by several other discount brokers, including low-price leaders Zecco and OptionsHouse.
