In case anyone was wondering if the Wowio Free iPod Shuffle promotion was legit, FedEx just delivered this to my door:

Please don’t ask for referrals in the comments. It’s a free and useful service, bring it up tonight to your friends when you go out 🙂

Free eBook Downloads From Wowio, Plus Refer 10 Friends For A Free iPod Shuffle

Wowio is a website that lets you download eBooks from their library for free. They are in Adobe Acrobat format, so don’t need any special software to read them. There’s also no annoying DRM, so you can move them between computers and PDAs with ease.

What’s the catch? Well, the titles are limited, so you’re not going to get the current New York Times bestseller. But they do have a wide selection, from classics to comic books (I mean, graphic novels!). Here are the titles I downloaded today (you get five each day):

  • Avant-Guide Las Vegas: Insiders Guide for Urban Adventurers (Travel Guide)
  • Critique 01: The Magazine of Graphic Design Thinking
  • Guerrilla Data Analysis Using Microsoft Excel
  • The Science of Getting Rich (supposedly inspired The Secret)
  • Slaughter-House Five by Kurt Vonnegut

Basically, check it out, and if nothing catches your eye, don’t join. Can’t beat free. I think they also make money by putting ads in the books, but they must be spaced pretty far apart. I’m about 50 pages into Slaughter-House Five and haven’t seen one yet.

To join, you must verify your identity. It’s relatively painless, you only need one of the following:

  • A non-anonymous e-mail address (no yahoo, hotmail, or gmail). A work or school e-mail should work fine, and they also accepted my @mymoneyblog.com e-mail.
  • Credit card – will not be charged
  • Scan of ID (Driver’s License or Student ID) – I’d probably avoid this. At least with the credit card you have built-in fraud protection.
  • Friends and Family code – Each new member can “vouch” for 3 others who don’t want to or can’t do one of the above.
Free iPod Shuffle

Right now, they are also having a promotion that if you refer 10 of your friends, they will send you a free iPod shuffle. This is actually a pretty easy deal, as it’s absolutely free to join and you don’t even need a credit card number. When you sign up, at the end they will ask you for the e-mail of the person who referred you.

Please don’t use my e-mail, I already have enough referrals. Below is a script that will return a random e-mail that you should use as your referrer in order help a fellow reader out. Then, I will ask them who used their e-mails as a referral, so you’ll have a chance to be listed.

I’ll make it an image scramble it to avoid spam, but you can also let me know if you don’t want me to put your e-mail up. Thanks!

Possible Free FICO Score w/ 15-Minute Lesson

Here is a potentially free FICO score and report for students that are willing to endure a 15-minute spiel, but it appears to be limited to the first 5,000 people. I’m running behind on a project, so let me know if it works 🙂 Thanks TK.

We’ve arranged with the Fair Isaac Corporation to pick up the tab on the first 5000 students who want to check their credit score. That’s right. It’s absolutely free.

So enter your info below to start. We’ll take you through a 15 minute tutorial on credit basics, credit cards, and building your credit. Once you’ve completed this 15 minute lesson, you’ll receive a free code and a link to MyFICO.com. Once you’re there, drop the code into the discount box and save yourself the $15.95.

Sunrocket VoIP Phone Service – 2 Years for $199

SunRocket VoIP is currently offering 2 years of phone service for $199, expiring tomorrow (3/28). If you miss it, this “special” seems to come around once every few months. I’ve been using SunRocket instead of a landline for well over a year now now and I remain very satisfied for the price (I paid $199 for the 1st year and $99 for the 2nd) – check out my SunRocket Review for details. There have been no added or surprise fees.

Added: You can also get two years for $229 from ViaTalk VoIP.

Citibank Ultimate Savings Account – $50 Bonus

Citibank has a new online savings account called the Ultimate Savings account. (It’s not the ultimate savings account.) It varies from their e-Savings Account noted in my online savings account comparison in the following ways:

  1. You don’t need a linked checking account; It can stand alone, unlike the e-Savings Account.
  2. The interest rate is slightly lower, at 4.65% APY instead of 4.75%.

There is no minimum balance and no monthly fees. Citibank is offering a $50 bonus for signing up if have never had any bank accounts with them before. Since you only get one, also consider this $100 bonus for opening a Citi e-Savings + Checking combo with at least $5,000.

Also note that it Citibank usually does perform a hard credit inquiry with account openings (for no good reason). So it may or may not be worth it. I used to have a Citi checking account, so I’m out. Thanks Tanyetta for the tip. Fine print:

$50 Offer is only available for first-time Citibank deposit account customers, and will be paid only once to any individual. Persons who currently have or at any time have had a deposit account at Citibank (or any of its predecessor banks) are not eligible. To qualify for this offer you must apply for and open a new Ultimate Savings Account by 04/30/2007. $50 will be credited to your Ultimate Savings Account within 90 days from the end of the statement period in which your account was opened.

I signed up for Travel and Leisure but didn’t notice it was Travel and Leisure Golf. Doh! Thanks J for the tip.

Live Somewhere Busy? Share Your Internet For Profit

FON is a company with an interesting idea: What if everyone shared their WiFi with each other? We could all get internet coverage in much of the world for free. But what about the bad people? FON has developed routers that have both public and private channels to allow people to share without worrying about their own privacy. There are still other worries, but considering how many people already have wide-open access points, I don’t think it’s too horrible. Sometimes they charge a one-time $30 fee for the special routers, and sometimes it’s free.

In addition to allowing the “sharers to share”, you can also pay for access to their network. Finally, there is the entrepreneurial option – get a kickback for selling your own internet access. They’ll even give you a free router to start. This is intended (on the honor system) for people who live near a Starbucks or other busy gathering space.

By installing your FON router, you let others share your broadband for a daily fee. A fee that goes straight into your pocket. A savvy patron of your Starbucks need only pay $2 a day for your WiFi. They’d have to be a grande drip to pay the [regular T-Mobile fee of] $10 Starbucks charges. Each customer who chooses you puts $1 into your latte fund. Cha-ching.

I think their new software even lets you decide how much bandwidth you want to “rent” out, so you won’t be stuck with molasses. Pretty slick! Thanks to Torger for the tip.
