Fat Pitch Financials Contributor’s Corner Free For A Day

In honor of its 2-year anniversary, Fat Pitch Financials is having a Open House for its pay section, Contributor’s Corner. This means if you hurry, you can get access to it for free (usually $10/month) all today 8/12.

What does it offer? Primarily a constantly updated list of “Going-Private” transactions, in which companies want to stop being publicly-traded and must therefore get rid of some shares. As a result, there is often a potential for profit. George has actually been giving me a free trial in return for a review for a while now, but I must admit I have not been putting it to full use. However, I recently did place one trade that may still have some potential upside. I’ll share it after I get permission, but until then go get access yourself!

Discover Miles Card Now Offering 12,000 Bonus Miles

I’ve mentioned the Discover Miles Card before, but the bonus has now been increased from 5,000 miles after the first purchase to 12,000 miles (1,000 for each month with a purchase). It still offers 0% APR for 12 months on both purchases and balance transfers, which means you can get the 12,000 mile bonus and earn interest on borrowed money without worrying about getting charged interest.

I got this card already, and outlined exactly step-by-step how I got my money from Discover. The deal is hotter now as you can get 7,000 more miles, and interest rates are higher than before. Assuming I got another $10,000 balance transfer, this deal would be worth about $500. Here’s how I got that number:

$10,000 x 4.75% x ~11 months of interest (to be conservative) = $435

12,000 miles can be used for:

10,000 miles = $50 cash
9,800 miles = $75 Gift Card to Gap, Banana Republic, J. Crew, Foot Locker, Macy’s, and similar
12,700 miles = $100 Gift Card to Eddie Bauer, Morton’s Steakhouse, and others

So if you estimate that 12,000 miles is worth about $65, then 435 + 65 = $500. This is an example of a deal that takes more work than an upfront bonus, but also has a higher reward.

Scottrade Referral Program Details – 3 Free Trades

Thinking of opening up a new account at Scottrade? I’ve had an account with them for years. They offer 3 free online trades if you are referred by an existing customer. The referrer also gets 3 free trades.

To get the the three free trades that you have six months to use, simply enter the referral code when filling out your application. Let me make sure all the terms were clear:

The referral bonus applies to all accounts except IRAs or custodial accounts. You must open the account with at least $500 for cash accounts ($2,000 for margin accounts). The free trades should show up about one week after you open and fund your accounts, and expire after 6 months.

Here is a screenshot of what you should see when you login, after you get the 3 free trades:

Discover Platinum Gas Card: 0% APR + 5% Back on Gas

The Discover More Card – No Balance Transfer Fee* is currently offering no-fee 0% APR balance transfers and 0% APR on purchases for 12 months. The fine print clearly says “If you make a balance transfer with this application, there is no balance transfer transaction fee.” I remember looking at this card before, and there was a fee back then.

On top of that you can get 5% cash back on Gas and Entertainment purchases from now until the end of March. The beauty of this card is that you can actually take advantage of both the balance transfer and the cashback at the same time since both purchases and balance transfers are at 0% APR. Just wait until after your first minimum balance payment, and you should have room under the credit limit to buy that gas. Finally, even after the 0% promotional period is over, you’ll still have a useable 5% back gas card.

See here for a detailed explanation on how to take advantage of 0% APR balance transfer offers (read all 3 parts). Also check out this example on how I got my money for a similar Discover card offer.

Here is the rewards fine print:

Earn cash rewards on every purchase made with your Card. Each year, earn a full 5% on your first $1,200 in gas purchases. In addition, earn a full 1% on other purchases in excess of $3,000; your first $1,500 in other purchases earns .25% and your second $1,500 in other purchases earns .50%. Gas purchases in excess of $1,200 earn Cashback Bonus at the same rate as other purchases. Purchases made at select warehouse clubs, discount stores and their affiliates earn .25%…. Increase your Cashback Bonus when you redeem your cash rewards for gift cards or certificates from our partners. Rewards are redeemable in $20 increments.

To summarize, the only special thing about this card is the 5% back on your gas purchases. Otherwise, the rewards program is pretty mediocre even though there are no caps on cashback.

I’m not sure how good the “Increase your Cashback Bonus when you redeem your cash rewards for gift cards or certificates from our partners” program is. I think you only get a $25 gift card in the place of $20 cash now. So unless you have a purchase at one of their partners already planned, I’d take the cash.

I still like these 0% deals a lot because as interest rates rise, these offers get even more lucrative. I would bet the average interest rate over the next year would be over 5%. That means, for each $10,000 in balance transfers you get, you’d get over $500 a year. It’s definitely more work than a simple signup bonus, but it’s also more money! As always, print out and save the Terms and Conditions for later when you apply.

$100 Bonus For Opening a TradeKing Brokerage Account

For those that are looking for a new discount brokerage, TradeKing is currently offering a $100 bonus for opening a new account with them. They offer $4.95 market and limit orders, both online and broker-assisted. No minimum balance requirements, no annual or inactivity fees. After talking with them, here are the offer details:

» Use the promotional code ‘(expired)
» Open with at least $1,000, and place your first trade by 4/15
» The bonus should credit ~2 weeks after your first trade
» You still need to keep $100 equity in the account for 6 months after your first trade to keep the bonus.

Per their fee schedule, they do charge a $50 fee for IRA closures or transfers, but there is no fee for an ACAT transfer out of a regular taxable brokerage account. This means that if you open this account and don’t like it, you can just move out all your shares of stock without having to sell them or pay transfer fees.

Here’s a possible plan for me:

1) Open with code and $1,000
2) Buy 1 share of EEM or other ETF at about $100 + $5 commission.
3) Take out rest of money except for maybe $25 in case EEM tanks.
4) Get $100 bonus, take it out too.
5) Treat it like I got a free share of EEM and move for free it to my Ameritrade I-Zone account if I choose, or just keep it there if I like the brokerage more than I-Zone (which also has $5 trades).

Seems like an easy way to try out another brokerage without any commitment

$100 Gift Cards for Citi Professional Card and AT&T Universal Card

I just came across some tasty cards that are currently offering $100 gift cards for opening!

Citi Professional MasterCard10,000 Thank You Points after your first $250 in purchases, which is the same as a $100 gift card at various places like Gas Stations, Home Depot, Target, Gap, and more. For students you can get $100 in straight cash for college loans.

You also get 3 points per dollar (~3% back in gift cards) on restaurant, gas station, auto rentals, and certain office supply merchants. 3% cash back on restaurants is nice. Auto rentals and office supplies stores, not so much, but hey it’s there. They also add some other features like expense tracking and special phone reps. I wish I had this card when I was consulting and and travelling all the time. I miss my expense account 🙂 Oh, and you don’t need to be a “Professional” to apply.

$50 Opening Bonus, E*Trade Money Market, 4.10% APY For 3 Months

(Oops, gotta read that fine print. Their regular 3.25% APY is only good for balances over $100k. Bummer, I might have kept it open after the bonus period, but 0.3% stinks.)

Just got this offer in the mail. Go here for the offer details. You get 4.10% APY for the first three months, after which you’ll go back down to their standard money market rate, currently at 3.25% APY 0.30% for balances under $5,000. I went for it, and the $50 bonus showed up in my account a couple days after I opened the account. No waiting is nice. With $1,000 cooped up for 120 days (4 months, you get about $68 $51, which is a 15% annualized return! Offer ends soon on 11/15.

The fine print makes getting the bonus a bit confusing. There is only a $100 opening minimum, but you need a monthly average of $1,000 (or combined balances of $5,000) to avoid a $10 monthly fee. Also, you’ll need to keep the account open for 120 days to avoid a $10 early closure fee. Overall, not bad if you just put in $1,000 and take it out and close the account after 6 months. They only let you fund electronically with a max of $100, so either open with a check or send in a 2nd deposit after the confirm your account great enough to make your monthly average at least $1,000.

Capital One 360 Changes Terms of $25 Bonus Promotion

In another brilliant move to lose potential customers, Capital One 360 has changed the terms of their $25 Opening Bonus to a minimum opening amount of $250. It’s a bit sneaky, because they will let you to open with only $1, but you won’t get the bonus. Instead, they claim you’ll just get “a friend for life”. Uh-huh.

$35 Opening Bonus for 3.75% APY HBSC Online Savings Account

HSBC Banks’s Online Savings Account (features mentioned previously), an ING/Emigrant Direct no-minimum no-fees clone, is currently offering a $35 Opening Bonus for new customers. The bonus code, which is already part of the URL, is ‘ccs20‘ in case you need it. I haven’t opened an account here, and am debating whether or not the $35 bonus is worth for an account I may or may not use, but hey, free money is free money. Anecdotally, they are only doing a “soft” credit pull to check your identity, so your credit score likely won’t be hurt either. Offer expires 10/31/05.

New 0% APR Balance Transfer Offer from Discover

I’ve been updating my list of the best 0% APR Balance Transfer offers about once a month as offers expire, but this month I actually came across a pretty good one – 0% APR interest for both purchases and balance transfers for 10 months with the Miles Card by Discover. No annual fee, and no balance transfer fees either. All the other Discover cards currently have balance transfer fees except for this one. I guess they’re pushing this card right now, so I’m not sure how long this will last.

On top of everything, you get 5,000 of their “Miles” after your first purchase. You get 1 Mile for each $1 in purchases otherwise. Airfare rewards start at $100 travel credit for 10,000 Miles. The nice thing is that you can actually get this bonus while also taking advantage of the balance transfer since both are at 0% APR for the 10 months.

Note that finance charges are applied using the “Two Cycles Average Daily Balance” method, which is a more costly method in applying finance charges for those who occasionally carry a balance, as compared to the “Average Daily Balance” method used by most credit card issuers. But, if you only carry a balance at 0% and pay it off in full at the end, then this shouldn’t affect you.

At current interest rates, for every $10,000 of balance you transfer you can arbitrage out $250-$300 out of this offer, plus you’re halfway to a $100 travel credit. Not bad. Or you could just get it and buy stuff interest-free for 10 months. Not that I condone that, of course.

More Free Money Rolling In…

Last month I got $241 in free money over a weekend. This week I got $198 more!

First, I finally received my $150 Visa gift card for applying to an MBNA Charles Schwab card:

Charles Schwab MBNA Gift Card

This is going straight to buying new tires for my car. Don’t spend your free money on useless crap! Alas, the $150 offer is longer available. However, you can still get a $50: $50 Charles Schwab MBNA gift card offer.

Second, I cashed out another $48 from ex24.com for referring two MyMoneyBlog readers: (they each got $24 as well)
